1993 GMC C1500 4X4 Wont work

When you engage in to four wheel drive it does nothing no grinding no noises and no 4x4 but vehicle will still move. Could this be the accuator in the transfer case ive heard there are to differnt kinds of accuators available where do I find the accuator and how do you check them to see if they are working.

My 95 sierra has done this. It lows the fuse every time we sift into 4x4. We think its the switch on the transmission that got shorted out by the snow, but we're not sure we havnt done anything about it yet.
