1999 Geo Prizm fumes

When I get out of the car and pass the gas tank, I smell fumes. It doesn't matter when I drove 10 miles or 100 - I always smell fumes. I DON'T smell them inside the car and I DON'T semll them if I'm stopped at a traffic light with the window down.

I took it to Auto Zone and they said my engine was giving off a "loose gas cap" error code but my gas cap was properly tightened. I even bought a new gas cap just in case.

And I'm getting really good gas mileage so I don't think it's a leak.

Ideas?

Look for any obvious leaks in the system, from tank to fuel rail.
There are switching valves and solenoids in the system to return fumes to the intake, you may have to check their function if there are no obvious leaks.
