1996 Geo Prizm Compatability

Transmission problem
1996 Geo Prizm 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Is a 1.6 engine compatible with a 1.8 tranmission. Am having the engine and transmission replaced and my mechanic says this is no problem. I need some advice.

The 1.6 was used in Corolla's and Prizm's past 93, so your mechanic may be right. The 1.8 was first used in 93.

So mechanically they should be a bolt up. Having said that, call a junk yardand ask for years of interchangeability.

One problem that may stop you is that in 96 all Toyota engines (and Prizm's) changed to OBDII protocal (from OBDI).

So if you were trying to put a 95 in a 96 you would have PCM/wiring issues.
