My speedometer just stopped working. Do I need a sensor or what

No, you need a new cable. There are two cables that connect to the speedometer.
The lower one (connects to transmission) will get dry and break.
Remove it from the trans. (It unscrews) and from the other cable that goes to IP.
If it is broke/binding you will need to replace it. You may find one at a junk yard, or buy a new one from Toyota.
In other words this is a mechanical speedometer, not electric.
