1996 Geo Metro service engine soon light cameon

When I turned on car it made a squeaky sound that lasted only a second or two.
I started driving and then there was some slight hesitation in picking up speed and engine light came on but car evened out and ran smoothly but engine light stayed on.
what could be the problem?

Take your metro to AutoZone, Advance Auto, or O'Reilly's Auto parts and get the FREE OBDII scan to find out what your issue is related too. I hope that helps.
