Gear shift

I am unable to shift from park. I was able to bypass the gear shifter by pressing the release button to move it into neutral ( with emergency brake on).
Then starting the car. What cause and and is this an expensive fix?

A blown fuse can cause this. Check the operations of the brake lights and if they are not working, check for a blown fuse. The other possible cause would be a faulty brake switch or interlock solenoid under the console. Cost of repairing would depend on what is wrong.
