I was having issues with the AWD. I took out the drive shaft to change it to 2WD. Now when I try to put it I gear, they don't work.

Hi,

I believe the drive shaft is needed because when the vehicle is not slipping, the drive wheels are in the rear.

What problems were you having?

Let me know.

05 saturn vue AWD. Rear differential making noise, pulled rear drive shaft to make rear wheel drive, front drive tires will not engage, but transaxle is shifting because rear output is spinning.

Before I took the drive shaft out, I was changing a wheel bearing, then it started making a lot of grinding noise in the rear and it wouldn't move in any gear. Like the ads were trying to kick in but shouldn't. I tried taking abs fuses out but that didn't work, put them back in and unhooked the battery to reprogram. That didn't work. So thought I'd try taking the drive shaft out to make it 2wd. And now I'm here.

Hi,

Which wheel bearing was being replaced? Are you sure the axle is fully engaged?

Question. If you place the vehicle in park, does it lock in place or does it move as if it is in neutral?

Let me know.

Hi,

If the vehicle is moving as if it is in neutral while in park, the driveshaft needs to be present. The hydraulics in the trans won't support the removal of the driveshaft.

So, we need to focus on what the noise is being caused by. Is it possible for you to record and upload the sound so I can hear it?

If that is the case and the shift linkage is working properly, something has come apart. If you lift the vehicle and spin the wheels, are you able to hear any odd sounds?

If there are no noises, try reinstalling the rear driveshaft to see if it still makes noise. If it started making noise in the rear when you replaced the right front bearing, something is not together correctly. It just doesn't make sense. Based on the description, it sounds like an axle isn't fully seated. Are there any sounds when in drive or reverse and the engine is running? I suspect we are missing something simple.

Let me know.

No noise when it's in drive or reverse and it's just sitting. But when you actually move and drive. The noise sounds like something rotating and smacking on the bottom of the car. The more I accelerate the faster and louder it gets. But I've looked under it and can't see anything smacking.

What you are describing sounds like either a universal joint or an axle joint. If you have a helper stand beside the vehicle while you hear this, can it be identified if it is from the front, middle, or rear of the vehicle?

Do you feel the clunking in the floor of the vehicle as if something is indeed hitting it?

Let me know,

Sounds like middle or rear of the vehicle. We already checked both joints because we thought that as well and they're fine. And yes, it feels like something hitting the bottom of the car.

Hi,

Has anyone watched under the vehicle when you experienced the feeling of it being hit from under the vehicle? Have you inspected the trans/engine mounts.

I realize there is a good chance you had someone watch, but it isn't making sense that you hear and feel it, but there is nothing obvious under it causing the noise/banging.

Have you opened the hood to check if the engine is moving in its mounts when you try moving?

Let me know. I think I already asked, but if you could record the noise and upload it for me to hear, that would be helpful. If you can't, I understand.
