I need to get it to pass smog but odometer reads (error). I do not have lots of money and I can work on cars fairly well. What can I do?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

I hate to say it, but there is not a quick fix for this. The odometer will display 'error' if an internal Instrument panel cluster (IPC) memory failure is detected or there is a loss of class 2 communication. Now, the bottom line is there should be a trouble code or codes stored in the computer which directly relate to this issue. A code U1000 indicates a class 2 communication issue. However, there should also be an additional code with it which indicates where the trouble is located. As far as the IPC memory failure, it can be related to the class 2 communication issue or the cluster itself may be bad.

Regardless, the system needs scanned to determine where the problem is originating. Also, an inexpensive scanner will most likely not identify U type codes.

If possible, can you get the computer scanned and let me know what codes are found? That way I can better direct you. Otherwise, it will become a guessing game.

Let me know.

Joe

Welcome back.
The only solid black wire to the BCM is for the horn relay circuit. I have attached three pictures for you to look through. It shows the BCM pin connectors, identifies wire colors, and what circuit it's related to.

Let me know if this helps.

We actually have three identical vehicles like the one listed above. 2 of the 3 now have an intermittent digital odometer/Trip meter. If you bang on the dash then for a brief second you can see the mileage. The mileage is counting correctly but the display has the issue. Could this be fixed by removing the cluster and cleaning the circuit board with electronic cleaner or will I have to fork out for a re-manufactured cluster? Thanks in advance for your time.

Some digital odometers have a battery ( watch type ) that powers the readout. I recently replaced mine. To my surprise it was a popular CR2032 watch /camera type battery. Replaced it nad it works great. Only issue is the odometer need to be reset to the original mileage prior to changing it. This requires software or electronics to do it. The battery was dirctly behind the digital panel. Unplug it from the cluster and look for the battery

I have the same problem on my girlfriend's 2000 cavalier. She would hit the plexiglass to get the reading until she broke it. I took the dash off to fix the glass, but I never did anything about the intermittent functioning of the digital odometer (bad mover I know). I was wondering about the software and electronics required to complete the job and how this works. I really appreciate any help.
