My gas gauge goes up when I step on the gas and goes back down if I let off. Very slowly it does this. It gives a true reading if the car is allowed to idle. When the tank is empty and the car is allowed to idle. It will register and the light comes on but if I step on the gas it stops giving me the the needs gas light and the needle continues to rise. When the vehicle is in park and I step on the gas the gauge stays where it is. This only happens when I am driving.

Good afternoon.

There is a constant voltage regulator inside the cluster that keeps the voltage at a steady voltage. It sounds like it has failed as when your car is running, the voltage varies due to the alternator charging the battery.

You may need to remove the cluster and have it sent out for repair.

It is a problem with the instrument cluster (dash) you may need to have it repaired.
