When I fill my tank up with gas, my engine wants to sputter. Mostly when I am slowing down or start moving again or at low idle. It wants to shut off. When my tank (reading gauge do not know actual) gets between 1/2 to 3/4 it drives fine nothing happens, my car drives better with low fuel than a full tank. No problem starting the car at all. I am starting to think I smell gas at a full tank. I am starting to look for puddles. There is absolutely nothing at the lower levels.

Hi,

Has the check engine light turned on? Also, when you fill the tank, stop adding fuel when the pump first clicks off.

Also, the emission control (EVAP) system captures the fumes and emissions produced by evaporated fuel. It has what is called a purge valve that keeps fuel vapor from entering the engine’s intake manifold until it’s commanded to open and purge the vapors.

As a result, excess fuel pressures from the tank can force more fuel to the engine when it is not needed, causing it to run poorly. However, if the purge valve is stuck, it should have set a check engine light. If it is staying on, have the computer scanned at a local parts store and let me know the code. I will be able to further assist you at that point.

Overall, this type of problem is usually a result of what I described above. Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

joe
