Fuel contamination diagnosis

Took my vehicle in as it had glow lamp fault light illuminated and then started to run a bit lumpy. The garage eventually cited the EGR valve which they replaced under warranty, carried out a routine minor service and then returned the car to me. However, the car was still running rough and same fault light came straight back on. Now the garage are saying it is fuel contamination- petrol in diesel tank- that has damaged the fuel injectors. Is it right that they failed to spot the fuel contamination in the first place? Even when they carried out lots of diagnostics and replaced the EGR valve and serviced the car?

Hello, I am Danny.
Just a few questions first. Did you mistakenly put petrol in by accident? It would run terrible as a result. They should have know when doing all the diagnostics especially with the Injectors. I agree with you. Why did they not figure this out then? Also, what was the fault code? Hope this helps and get back to us to let us know. Thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hi Danny,

I do not believe I put petrol in, but the garage took two months to diagnose the fuel contamination so I cannot remember for sure when and where I last fueled or trace my receipts. I am pretty diligent at the pump so honestly cannot believe I made this mistake. However, let's say that I did, even then I fueled the car at least two weeks before it showed the fault light and started to have a running issue. Could it run cleanly with petrol instead of diesel? At the most it would have been a 50/50 mix petrol to diesel. The garage maintain they did not pick up on the mis-fuel earlier as the diagnostics led them to a fault with the EGR valve, which they replaced. They also say after this the engine was running smoothly, despite it being rough as soon as I drove it again. Is it possible if the mis-fuel is causing the engine to run rough, it could for a period run smoothly before being rough again? I am afraid I do not know the actual fault code you asked about.
Thanks,
Hannah

Hello again.

Yes, your car would be running roughly due to the contamination the entire time. Is the car still running not well? Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.
