I am tearing down the engine to do a head gasket job. I cannot get the timing chain cover to pop off. I have removed the crankshaft pulley and gasket, the engine mount, and all the bolts. It will not pop loose and I’m worried of banging on it too much and damaging the aluminum. There is only one thing I am unsure about. Near the top of the cover there is a sensor port that I unplugged. I can’t tell if I need to take that off completely as well and it how to do that. If not, what else do I need to do to remove the cover?

Hi,

The cover was installed with a liquid gasket maker and they can be tight. They actually make a special tool for removal.

I attached three pics below. Number 1 is simply to make sure you didn't miss any bolts. Pic 2 is the tool (pan separator) I'm referring to, and pic 3 simply shows how it is used.

Let me know if this helps. Also, try to work a razor blade around where the gasket material is located. Just be careful not to cut the aluminum. Also, pic 3 is from a Nissan manual. It shows the tool being used to remove an oil pan.

If you need directions or timing mark info, let me know.

Take care,
Joe
