Tranny problem?

1964 Ford F-600, 4 speed manual transmission with hi-lo rear end. Motor was running, driving up a hill and then we stopped moving, motor still running fine, can put standard transmission in gear and let out clutch, still no movement, while coasting backward down hill I did see that the driveshaft from the rear end was spinning. I assume a tranny problem, but any ideas of where to start?

When it stopped going forward. Did it roll or lock up? When you clutch it do the gears grind? If not and the clutch seems to work normally. You may have snapped the tranny output shaft.

Yes it rolls, regardless if I am in gear or not, I couldn't see any outward damage to the visible driveshaft (rearwrd of tranny) and the driveshaft does spin while the rear tires are rolling (so I ruled out rear-end problems) could it be something between the engine and tranny? Clutch still works, can go into all gears but to no effect of rolling, or hampering motor, no grinding when gearshifting without clutch
