I have a 1969 Ford Mustand Grande, with a 302 engine, automatic transmission and factory air. Service regularly, tune up two weeks ago, new alternator and generator in last 3 years. About 40,000 miles on a rebuilt engine

Yesterday, I turned the engine off. Decided to repark the car, and turned it back on. Moved it a few feet. And it started racing. Key would not turn engine off -- ignition moved to all three positions accessesory and on. And off. Would not turn off car. High noise level like screeching metal on metal

Decided to drive it around. Went about 1/2 block still would not turn off. Drove 1/2 mile. Noticed none of the dash gauges. Speedometer or gas gauges were working. Engine began to sound normal no screeching. Pulled car over. STILL COULD NOT TURN IT OFF. After idlying in park. For about a minute. It just turned it SELF OFF. And would not start again.
any suggestions?

You have a short cicuit in the ignition cicuit! Could be the switch, as for the racing engine, could be a bad accelerator cable, seems like a lot to go wrong at the same time, but it's 40 years old!
