Check engine light

I was driving today and the check engine light came on out of the blue. I took it to a couple of places and when they tried to hook the computer up to the diagnostic to read it it said it couldnt get any information. I'm going to take it by autozone later to see if they have any luck but wanted to know if you had dealt with this problem anywhere else.
The windstar is running fine except for the cold rough in the mornings when its cold. My husband is deployed and I need to travel on monday to go home to MO for thanksgiving and I'm wondering if its safe to do.
Thanks
By the way its a 2003 Ford Windstar LX

If they cant get the scaner to read they should check the fuses
check the gas cap if it on tight
remove it and then put it back on
also it may be a vacuum leak in the manifold
and if its the case u will be ok to drive it home
but
before have it checked
and if its not a misfire or some sensor out u will be ok
good luck
