Steering problem
2000 Ford Windstar 6 cyl Automatic 89,000 miles

When turning, there is an akward noise that the van makes. Kind of the same noise as when power steering fluid is needed but the chamber is full. A few people have told me that I have to replace the steering pump but I want to be sure first.

Ford power steering pumps are very sensitive to low fluid levels. If any air made its way into the system during its history, it is likely damaged. Therefore, even though the resovoir is full now, the damage has been done and the noise results.

Also, bad driving habits such as keeping the steering wheel pegged to either left/right extreme while trying to make those tight shopping-center parking lot turns is hard on all steering components. This can damage the pump as well.

You may be best off replacing the pump.
