I noticed the temp on my dash running high, and also the heat coming from the vents and floor wasn't getting 'hot', just luke-warm. Asked a few mechanic friends and they suggested replacing the thermostat. I dropped the car off at my long-time mechanic's shop and explained the problem, as I have here, even suggesting that they check the thermostat. They called and explained that they needed to replace the water pump and I gave them permission, paying almost $300. 4 days later, I'm still experiencing the exact same issues. Suggestions?

Thermostat been done yet? Cooling system flush? Heater core flush? Also check for cooling fan operation.

No, haven't done the thermostat yet. Was wondering if that's the most obvious next move.
