When I shift from park to drive there is a loud thunking noise. What could be the problem? The car is a 1998 Ford Taurus.

Hi there,

It may be one of a few problems, but try looking at

1. Transmission is worn and when drive is selected trans has to build up pressure and noise is a pressure telated issur, Change trans oil & filter and do any (if there are on this transmission) adjustments.

Drive line, check for any ware in the universals and excessive back lass in the diff. The noise could be any or all the above "taking up slack"as power (selecting a gearfrom rest) is applied.

May be as easy as a broken trans. Or engine mount.
