Hi,

I have Ford Taurus SE 2004. Mileage is 56000. When the car goes over humps slowly, I can hear a sound 'hiss' for short time. However I do not feel any discomfort during long drives due to bumps or anything like that.
When I contacted mechanic he suggested me that I should change front struts.

Please let me know when struts needs to be replaced and what is impact of not changing in the scenario I am experiencing.

Thanks & Regards,
Sanju

How long they last depend on the quality of the struts and what kind of driving you do. Struts generally last 50,000-60,000 miles. If you do a lot of smooth highway driving they should last longer. Does your car handle OK during sharp cornering (does it roll or sway)? Does the front end dive when braking hard? If not and you feel the ride is smooth you probably don't need them yet. You might want to think about replacing them in the next 10,000-12,000 miles though.
