Ford Taurus front tire howl

I just purchased a used 1996 ford taurus gl with 100,000 miles. As I was driving it home on freeway, at about 55 mph, a VERY loud "howl" came from the front right tire. As soon as I applied the brakes it stopped. Then after a few miles it started again (this time at a slower speed). As soon as I brake, noise stops. Tires seem to be in great shape and the rotors look smooth. Any ideas?

Your tire probably has a belt shift. Install it on the other side to see if the noise moves
