98 Taurus noise

Hello,
I hope you could help me on a question. I have a 98 taurus with 178,000km it has a 3.0 24 valve. The problem is that when the car starts it makes a grinding noise coming from the a/c clutch, when it engages it doesn`t make a noise what is causeing it to make the noise and what dod I need to do to fix it? P.S the airconditoning blows ice cold air

It sounds just like your problem is similiar to the the noise that my 98 grand Marquis makes. I believe that your problem is the A/C clutch that is attached to the air conditioner compressor. Normally, when the a/c is not needed, the pulley just free spins the the pulley on the a/c compressor clutch. Howver, when A/c is selected the clutch engages the a/c compressor and it compressors the refrigerant. With all the miles that you have, I would just have the a/c compressor and clutch replaced as a unit. Good luck.
