2001 Ford Taurus where to start

It wont start unless I keep pumping the gas. And then it rough and you give it more gas and it like dies out and makes this loud noise. Backpressure so strong it shots of the recovery tank cap. I think it is the converter but just don't know what should I test

When you say it shoots out the recovery tank, are you refering to the coolant recovery tank? If so, you have a bad head gasket and it's blowing pressure through the cooling system.
