I am running 87 octane fuel, but under loads like hills I hear it spark knocking. I was told that this engine has a octane plug that you can remove and it will advance the timing. Is this true, and can I remove it myself. They said the knocking should go away. I just recently changed the spark plugs. Thanks Tim.

Check the knock sensor/s its job is to retard the ignition timing when engine starts detonating/spark knocking also the EGR valve if its not opening

Yes you do have an octane plug see item location no. 2 below
