1996 Ford Taurus Motor locked

My 1996 Taurus Sho was running. Starter went out. Car shut off wouldn't start. Put new starter in now every one says motor locked up. Because they tried to turn motor over with ratchet on pully. Flex pipe is bad & sounded like motor was knocking. Car is full of oil. How could a valve have dropped or broke

When it comes to mechaincal breakage, it just happens sometimes.I it full of coolant? If not try removing spark plugs and see if it will turn over, coolant can hydro-statically lock and engine and keep it from turning over. Otherwise it was just bad luck and something internal broke
