I have a 96 tarus we recently put a motor in it when I start it it runs like a new one I give it gas and runs fine but when I put it in gear it falls on its face misssing and backfiring

When its running try disconnecting the neutral safety switch and see if it is ok. I have seen the transmission neutral safety switch cause some crazy problems like this.
