1993 Ford Taurus front end problem

My taurus wagon has had a funny rattling up front for a while and been sitting since I have been unable to have repairs done. I was getting ready to take it to the shop (midas) when as I got into the car I heard a very loud explosive sound like a huge firecracker and at the same time the car fell about 2 or so inches one the driver side. I was told that I could go ahead and drive it to the shop but when I started to the bumps in the road are just awful and I am afraid to cause severe damage. What could have possibly cause the "explosive sound" and some steam or smoke like substance coming from the wheel area.

I am afraid to drive it anymore to get it checked out but still can't really afford to have it towed to the nearest shop either, I am quite far away. Your help is appreciated. The car is definately lower on the driver side as opposed to the passenger.
