My Taurus has the 3.8 V-6 and has always passed the required smog test's every 2 years up until now. I guess the state added a Fuel Evaporative Controls Functional category of which, this car Failed.

It passes all other areas of tests, just as it has in previous testing. The new Evaporative test has a fuel cap/hose assembly that goes to their computer whereas the previous tests only used a fuel cap (without a hose).

I'm going to take an educated guess this is going to be something expensive to diagnose and cheap to fix.

Any ideas?

If gas cap passed the test and evap system failed
have to do a smoke test to check for leaks
test may cost up to a $100 depend on your area

What is this test saying fails? Pressure loss within the tank and various fuel/vapor lines?
