I have the XLT model, stick shift, two wheel drive with 103,079 miles on it. The check engine light came on and I took it to AutoZone and the did the thing with the computer and got the following response: code p1443 definition EVAP canister purge valve mechanical fault or vmv fault condition. Explanation: ECM detected a fuel tank pressure change greater than a minus seven inches of h2o in thirty seconds with purge less than 0.02lbs per minute. Probable causes: 1. Failed EVAP pressure sensor 2. Blocked hose between purge valve and ftp sensor. 3. EVAP purge valve stuck closed. Help! I have no idea what they are talking about where is this purge valve at and it is past time to get my new vehicle license. It will not pass emissions with the check engine light on.

This is an EVAP code, purge valve should be somewhere close by the gas tank. I do not want to jump the gun given this is an early OBD2 with a non enhance EVAP system. Still quite difficult to locate and verify a repair for average mechanic who make a living on auto repair. Do you have access to an EVAP machine, a professional Ford compatible scanner and full access of EVAP hoses and wiring via PCM diagram? Plus advance engine performance/emission repair training? If you do not have just one of the above, it is not happening. Also, even if you fix it you must run drive cycle to turn on all monitors back after clearing the code with less two.

The valve and sensor are connected together with a vacuum/fuel vapor hose at the left front of the engine compartment. I have done tons and tons of sensors versus the solenoid/valve. And the hose usually is deteriorated 99% of the time so I would ask your parts person for a 6-8 inch length of fuel vapor line (regular fuel line works also).
