High pitched whining sound

1999 ford ranger 4x4 90,000 miles, 3.0 liter engine, manual transmission - when the car is moving in 2 or 4 wheel drive, I can hear an unsettling high pitched whining sound. Up until this point I have had only minor problems and no major repairs. Someone told me that virtually all 1999 Rangers have a specific axle or differential problem around 80,000+ miles. Is this true?

Not true. Haven't seen one yet.

Check your rear u-joint for play. There may be not be any, but while your there, check for rust settiment around the caps on the ujoint.

A piece of hardware may have let go in the brake drum also.
