Hey fellas, 2003 Ford Ranger 86000 miles. I just bought the vehicle a week ago and I started it up yesterday and the engine was squeaking pretty loudly, it almost goes away when I drive, but when I idle it gets pretty annoying. I assume this is a Belt problem, which isnt a big deal, but a friend of mine who has more car experience than I told me that it sounds like the bearings are going in my alterntor. Im not sure what it exactly is and was jsut curious if anyone might know, and might know the cost of a new belt or new alternator if thats the case?

Hello,

Let try a couple things first.

Get a can of spray lube.

With engine off find the tensioner pulley, spray the center bolt. Start engine. Does squeal go away?

Yes - replace pulley

No - turn vehicle off then find Idler Pulley spray center bolt, start vehicle. Does squeal go away?

Yes - replace pulley

No - with engine still running spray behind alternator pulley. If squeal goes away then replace alternator.

Post results here.
