I have a 2002 ford ranger with a 2.3L DOHC engine. The truck has around 139,000 miles. My problem is sometimes in the morning when i start it, it acts like it doesnt want to run...idles really strange, around 300 rpm. If i hit the gas, it brings idle up to normal and everything is good from then on. Another symtom i am having is when driving at 30-40 mph the truck surges alot. It does it until i pick up speed then i do not notice it anymore....but anytime i go around that speed i notice that. Sometimes when i start off from a stop light or whatever it seems like its not running on all cylinders for a split second then it takes off. I am lost on this issue. i dont want to try to guess and fix...i am on a very tight budget. Can anyone please help me out? Thanks alot!!

Sounds like you need a tuneup. Plugs and wires should smooth it out for you. If you still have the idle issue after the tuneup do the following.
The idle issue may just need to clean the IAC valve. This is mounted on the intake air horn it controls the air flow at idle. they have a tendency to build up carbon and it slows down the response. Just take it off and spray it with cleaner clean the holes with a tooth brush and cleaner.
