FUELING PROBLEM

When try to gas my truck up at the pump, the fueling start out fine but after a minute the pump start clicking like the tank is full but the tank is empty. It takes about 15 minutes just to put five gallons in the the tank. I thought that it might be the pump but this occurs at every pump that I have tried.

Hi there,

This is a problem with the fuel fill tube here is what you need to replace to fix the problem in the diagram below #2

The Mechanical, Returnless Fuel System (MRFS) consists of:
the fuel tank
the fuel tank filler pipe which contains a restrictor plate to permit only an unleaded fuel nozzle to be inserted
a 1/8 turn fuel tank filler cap
a fuel filter providing filtration to protect the fuel injectors
fuel supply and return lines
a top-mount, bottom-sense fuel delivery module containing:
- the electric fuel pump which provides pressurized fuel to the engine
- the fuel level sensor
- an inlet filter
- a check valve which maintains system pressure after the pump is shut off
- a pressure relief valve for overpressure protection in the event of restricted flow
- a fuel pressure regulator

The fuel pump is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which energizes the fuel pump relay. Electrical power to the pump is provided through the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch. The IFS switch is located on the toe board to the left of the right-hand kick panel.

We have just had the pump assembly in the tank replaced and checked the hoses at the tank, but the gas will still not go in the tank. It keeps cutting off the pump

Check all your vapor lines. The in fuel tank check valve for vapor may be bad, the vapor lines could be bad, even a faulty charcoal/carbon canister could be messing with the vapors blocking up.

Also a kinked hose.

I have a 2002 ford ranger 4.0, I have to put gas in very slow or it wants to puke it up. Is there a check valve or vent that might be defective? Thks

Check valve won't do that. Also, your gas cap is the vent. Look for a kink in the tube that runs from the gas cap to the tank.

1987 Ford Ranger

I was told that the vent in my fuel tank is stopped up & was fairly easy to correct. It took me over an hour to pump 10 gallons of gas. Where is the vent located & what does it look like?

Its right on top of the tank it has a vapor hose going to it, its the only vent on the top of the tank thats not built in with the fuel pumpand sending unit.
