1999 Ford Ranger 4X4 91500, 3.0L 4X4 problems

When I try to engage the 4X4 with the electronic switch nothing happens. This goes for both the hi and lo settings. Then when I put the switch back to 2wd the 4hi and 4lo lights on the dash blink about four or five times. After a couple minutes the lights do this again and repeat the process until I turn the truck and leave it off for a while. Could it be the motor that engages the 4wd of the transfer case? I don't hear any clicking or anything. Thanks for the help.

When you put it 4 wheel drive how do you do it.

I do it exactly the way the manual reads. I even try to go into 4lo by putting it in to neutral and depressing the brake but nothing. I follow the manual to the T, I tried going slow and switching into 4hi and doing it stopped with it in neutral and the brake depressed and with the brake not pressed. I've tried everyway possible that I know.
