1997 Ford Ranger Temp sensor

I just got this truck, and some one has cut the harness for the temp gage sending unit. (1 wire) The gage is good, cooling syst is good, and sending unit is new, but I cant get the temp gage to work. I know there are 2 types, I guess my question is, is there a differance in the two? I dont know witch one my ranger takes, because the harness was cut. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks
