97 ford ranger 2x4 automatic. Trans swap to a 4x4 automatic with transfercase. Its a 2 wheel drive truck with 4x4 axles but it still has the 2 wheel drive automatic transmission in it.I was wanting to put a 4x4 trans and tranfercase in it. Is this possible? Especially with the 4 cyclinder. Engine. Does ford make a automatic to fit the engine or am I going to have to change to a standard trans?

I'm not sure I understand. The truch is a 2wd with 4wd axles. You want to put the transmission and transfer case in it so you can use the 4wd. Am I correct so far?

Now, I don't believe they used the 4 cyl with an automatic trans. Contact a local salvage yard to confirm my beliefs. Next is the issues of making the 4wd work. If the truck is originally 2wd, you are going to be playing with speed sensors, 4wd actuators.

You know, the more I think about this, the less I think it's worth it. Anything can be done, but you are looking at a ton of work.

Let me know if you have specific questions.
