1991 Ford Ranger quits like run out of gas

Have ranger that quits like it ran out of gas. If it sits a short time it will start again. Have tried many things but cannot figure out the pioblem. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Best thing to do to avoid sinking money in it is wait for it to die out and when it wont start check for spark, and check for fuel, and compare it when it will start
