Guy who says that the transmission leaks. Bad

I just bought this 1990 Ford Ranger 4x4, 4.0L V6 with 79000 miles on it from a guy who says that the transmission leaks. Bad. He said he tried to pull a large rack of hay with it and "blew a seal". What is most likely wrong? Also, if I can get a rebuild kit from somewhere, what should I get, and on a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult of a job will it be to fix?

Thanks,
Ryan

Depends on which seal blew out. None of which should ever happen. If it did that then I would suspect another problem somewhere. Pulling a trans is not that difficult, just akward

Thanks for the feedback. So, you are saying that it is unlikely that he blew some seal by pulling something that heavy, and that there is probably something else wrong, causing it to leak? If so, then am I better off taking it somewhere to diagnose?

More like something has gone wrong inside the trans to blow a seal
