Engine Performance problem
1990 Ford Ranger 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

A 1990 Ford Ranger is giving us problems. A high idle that eventually goes down but only after the engine has warmed up. Just about everything has been replaced and cleaned. Below 30 mph it will lunge and sputter. What's going on? Did we offset or crack something putting the engine back together? Any hints or advice please and thank you!

Try cleaning out the idle air control valve and test the throttle position sensor

We tested the throttle position sensor and it was fine. We've almost narrowed it down to the idle air control but we have no idea how to test it (?)

Did you clean the IACV? If not do so and perform the tests in the repair manual
