I know this is a stupid question but I have mainly only wrenched on my old chevys had real good luck on fords holding up, but any way ive researched a diagram at atozone webstore (where I bought my rear main seal) and its a seal nothing like the 2 peice on a chevy lol, its the 1 peice rubber seal, and according to this diagram it says nothing about pulling the oil pan, so I thought id make 1 last ditch effort on this to see if anyone who dealt with these more could tell me before I pull the motor and do it all on a stand, if I can do it without dropping the pan ill just drop the trans an go like this diagram showed, just wanted to hear from some one who knew. Also thanks Indyduke it was enough help to let me know pull the motor rather than drop the trans an partially pull the motor, Was you replaceing a rear main seal when you had your pan off the 91 you referred to. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

I was replacing an oil pump. So I didn't need access to the rear of the engine, just the bottom end. I found it was easiest to leave the tranny and the engine bolted together, jack up the engine and do what I could to get the pan to clear the crossmember and go from there.

Replacing a single piece rear main doesn't require that you have access to the bottom end of the engine. I hope this helps. Taking the oil pan out was hard enough without seperating the engine and transmission.
