My 1998 Mazda 626 Fails Smog / HC @ 15mph = 66 (max 56)

After a tune-up (new plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter), it gets exactly the same reading.

There are no diagnostic codes.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

- Mike

(yes, I already posted in "other" - I didn't expect to find 'Mazda' under 'Ford')

You could have an EGR problem, bad O2 sensors, or a catylitic converter that needs replaced.

Thanks for your suggestions.

After a $700 in repairs and two trips to the smog station, I decided to look at it myself and found a disconnected vacuum hose.

After reconnecting the hose, it passed.

That sucks. I hate it when I spend a bunch of money and it was something simple. It happens to the best of us.

Sorry to hear about that; mine can't pass emissions because of that stupid check engine light- I haven't yet made those repairs (upper cat conv) -let me go check the vacuum hoses to see if that could be a problem. In MD, they don't even test the emissions, they hook up an OBD-II tool and just read the ecm.
