after driving for a while the starter will dis-engage and just spin. If it's shimmied and re-tightened it will work until it comes loose again

If I understand you correctly the problem is the starter mounting bolts loosen themselves up after a while. To stop this put Lock-tite or other thread locker on the threads of the bolts before installing them
