1959 Other Ford Models battery

Old ford tractor Six volt system w/positive ground. When starter is engaged, positive post (ground) gets very hot to point of insulation smoking.

Have the starter checked for an internal short circuit. Make sure the terminals are clean and tight pay special attention to the earth.
