Engine Mechanical problem
1961 Ford Galaxie Automatic

I went to replace the battery on my car and can't remember which side is the negative wire and which is the positive?(The connectors on the auto are not labeled)
One looks as though it goes into a component located above the tire wheel. The other goes into the engine directly.
As I went to start the vehicle, some it started to smell within a minute of smoldering burning-didn't see smoke, but I shut it off immediately.
Could I have possibly hooked it up backwards?
Please help>
thanks!

One cable goes to the engine which is the negative and the other, the positive cable goes straight to the starter battery terminal.

You probably did-if there's no power inside -no lights -you have burned out the fusible link/s
