My 2002 Ford Focus has been running smoothingly for the past a few years. However recently I notice that it makes a noise during acceleration. The noise is not sharp but kinda loud. This only happens shortly after car start up and during acceleration. After driving for about 5 mins the noise is gone. Any idea what I shall look into? Thanks!

Unfortunately Ford Focus does not have a tachometer so I cannot know the exact RPM while driving. I did try hitting the gas in park, did not hear that noise though. The noise is like a few times per second kinda frequency and is some what intermittent even if I'm constantly pushing the gas pedal. The sound is more clearly heard when driving with the windows closed. It's hard to describe the sound, maybe more like tapping. It is kinda similar to the noise from a tractor (not that loud though). Hearing the noise always make me feel like something is starting up slow and trying hard to catch up.

Maybe transmission or an exhaust leak. Can it be heard at idle so someone could investigate source?

I checked a few videos about exhaust leak on youtube. The noise from my car sounds very much like that caused by exhaust leak. I'll have that part checked first. Thank you!

From your discription I thought exhaust leak sharp and loud was the clue. Hope it is simple fix.
