My f350 has front auto or manual locking hubs when the switch is used to put it in 4wheel drive it will not engage however if you manualy lock the hubs and turn the switch to 4x4 the 4 wheel drive will engage. I have checked the fuses and they are ok and I can here a noise from the hubs when the engine is off and I turn the switch. What could the problem be. I have a friend with a 1999 f250 doing the same thing.

The automatic hubs are vaccum operated. Use a gauge to check for vaccum at the hub. If you have vaccum at the hubs, you may have a bad seal in the hub. Also if you have had any work done to the front end of the vehicle, there is a special washer in the hub that if installed backwards will cause the automatic hubs to not work properly. If you do not have vaccum at the hubs, you may have other problems ranging from a bad solenoid all the way to a faulty module. Vaccum test the hubs first and then please post your findings. Thank you
