The battery symbol showed up on the dash when started, drove about 20 miles and noticed the voltage guage dropping. Went to parts store and they tested battery and said one cell was dead, replaced battery and tested again and it showed 0 voltage output. Is this a dead altenator or is there some type of relay or inline fuse that could have gone out?

Your original problem was with the charging system, not the battery. You likely just needed to recharge the battery. You may have a bad alternator but check all the fuses and fusible links before buying one.
