My F150 has just started making a growling noise that can only be heard above 40MPH or so. As the vehicle goes faster the noise grows louder. When your foot is lifted from the accelerator the noise stops. Any ideas?

Does the sound change when going around turns? Also, check the pinion bearing for play. It is at the end of the drive shaft where it goes into the differential. Also, check if there is any play where the front of the drive shaft goes into the transfer case.

NOTE: Place the park brake on and make sure the vehicle is secure and can not move. Then place it in neutral to remove any tension from the driveshaft.

Let me know what you find.

I have tracked the problem to the transfer case, which at this time appears to be functioning properly. I have yet to check the fluid, which is obviously the next step. Any comments?

Chances are one of the output bearing are bad (front or rear). Check the fluid and make sure there are no metal shavings in it. If it looks good, chances are it is one of the bearings I mentioned.
