I just bought a used 2002 f150. It starts fine until
the engine heats up, then it cranks but won't turn over every time. Of course when I took it back to the dealer, it starts immediately every turn of the key. When it runs, it runs fine, no hesitation or bucking. I have a few ideas, but I'd like to know where you would start looking.

When it doesn't start, are you getting spark and fuel to the engine?

It's definately getting spark. The fuel issue is where I'm looking. I'm thinking fuel pump problems, but would it run well other than at start up, which it does, if it were fuel pump?

It could. I would start by checking fuel pump pressure when it happens. Also, you may want to try switching the fuel pump relay with one with the same part number to see if that changes anything.

Let me know what you find or if you need directions.

I feel like a total idiot today. The starting problem was in the theft deterent system. When we bought the truck, it came with three keys, I always used the same one to start the truck with, and the mechanic always used a different one. Well, the one I used wasn't chipped to the truck and the system was shutting off the fuel pump, so no fuel pressure. I sat there at the dealer and watched the mechanic use one key and fire it instantly and use a different key and watch it crank endlessly. The theft light did flash, but of course when I tried to start it, my hand was on the steering wheel and blocked the light. Not that I probably would have caught it anyway.
Needless to say, have 2 keys now instead of 3 and a truck that fires everytime and runs great. Thanks for the the responses and I have a little more information to store in this old brain now, although I'll probably forget it before I need it again. Mike

Mike:
It happens more than you think. I'm glad it was a free fix for you. Take care and let us know if you have questions in the future.
