I have a 2001 F150 4-wheel drive Lariat. I am expriencing a starting issue. I have replaced the battery with one that is one step up from the standard one it calls for, replaced the generator about 2 yrs. Ago and also the serpentine belt just recently. My voltage gauge reads okay. But today, it wouldn't start. My battery is at 8.7 volts and only is at 7% charged. I am not sure what to do next. Is there a voltage regular that has gone bad or is it some thing else? Also when I stop at night my head lights get a little brighter when I take off, and my odometer sometimes blinks and my wipers don't seem to come on or shut off as quickly as they used to when I turn the switch.

Hi:
It sounds like something is draining the battery over night. It could be a bad diode in the alt which would allow the battery to drain when off, but the alt will work normally when running. You can have that checked on the truck at most parts stores for free. I would start with that.

If you would like to check if there is a draw on the battery with it off, go to this site and it will provide the instructions as to "How To".

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
