I had to bag my starter the other day to get my truck started and left the truck running for about 12 hours straight as I was on a bit of a road trip. I returned home, shut the truck down and the next day when I had to leave, it would not start, all I got was a clunck from the starter I wrapped on it a few times and nothing. I bought a life time starter from NAPA and got the same result, so I bought new cables and same result. *NOTE* When I turn the key on (with a vehicle connected with jumper cables) the voltage gauge go to the H then to the L and climbs back up to about 5/8 and maintains that reading and all I get from the truck is a quick grunt and then nothing. I have tried crossing the celanoid and the relay both ending with the same result.

With a volt meter accross the battery posts, what does it read with nothing on? Then, what does the meter read when you try to crank the engine? Do you have 12 volts at the starter side of the solenoid? Does the solenoid "click" when you trun key to start? If yes, do you have voltage on the load side of the starter? Please advise.

Have your battery tested. It may be failing internally. It may show good voltage but have low amps under a load. Good Luck.

I am not sure if the celaniod clicks but the starter engages for a partial crank. Maybe Ican get a volt meter tomorrow, nearest neihbor is 2 miles away. Could it still be the battery even though the voltage gauge on the dash reads what it does?

Yes it could be a battery as it may not be able to hold a load so I would have it tested. But you still need give James the info that is needed to be of more assistance. Hope this is helpfull.
